Choosing Three Phase Transformers

Choosing Three Phase TransformersChoosing Three Phase Transformers starts with an understanding of three phase transformer connections. There are only four transformer combinations which are possible as follows:

  • Delta to wye - the most common connection for industrial and commercial applications.
  • Delta to delta - connection used for industrial applications.
  • Wye to delta - connection used for transmissions of high voltage power.
  • Wye to wye - connection which is rarely used due to balancing and harmonics issues (usage is not recommended).

Connections of three phase transformers are in delta or wye configurations as follows:

  • Wye-Delta Transformer – Primary winding connected in wye and secondary wining connected in delta.

  • Delta-Wye Transformer - Primary winding connected  in delta and secondary winding connecting in wye.

When Choosing Three Phase Transformers, three single phase transformers can become a “bank” if the desired size and ratio cannot be found.  With a "bank," primary and secondary windings connect in a delta or wye connection.  Allow the delta and wye connection requirements for your application guide you when Choosing Three Phase Transformers.

More About Choosing Three Phase Transformers

Choosing Three Phase Transformers involves making choices about delta connections and wye connections.  Choosing Three Phase Transformers connections are further defined as follows:

  • Delta connections are an aptly designed short-distance distribution system.  Delta connection systems are usually situated close to a supplying substation where they are utilized for small commercial loads and neighborhoods.  With a delta system, only one voltage is available between two wires.  A delta three phase system is easy to visualize if you think about the shape of a triangle.  A three phase, three wire, delta system would be represented at each point of the triangle.  Between any two wires, voltage would be the same.
  • With a wye system, the voltage amount will always be the same on a three phase system with the voltage between any two wires remaining static.  It is helpful to note, the voltage between any one of the phase conductors and the neutral will be less than the power conductors.  The voltage between any two power conductors will remain static at 1.732 (square root of 3) x the voltage between any one of the conductors and neutral.  By dividing the phase-to-phase voltage by 1.732 you can determine the phase-to-ground voltage.
